Machine & Automation Design Engineer

This individual will provide technical support to new and existing manufacturing by developing new designs of methods, tooling, fixtures, machines, and other related equipment. They will research and provide proposals for engineering projects, including cost estimates and return on Investment (ROI). They will also resolve engineering problems in manufacturing.

Job Duties & Responsibilities
- Provides engineering analysis on the design of fixtures, workstations, parts, machines, and processes, including problem identification, analysis, and resolution.
- Prepares and carries out approved recommendations to include tool redesign and alterations, change of material specifications, dimensions, methods, routing information, etc.
- Researches advanced new technologies and develops proposals for automation, mechanization, methods, special tooling, machine attachments, etc., for the purpose of problem resolution and/or cost reduction. Adopts and utilizes new technologies such as machine vision, robot programming, sensor technology, etc.
- Investigates various types of new machines and equipment with regard to versatility and diversification of production features required, prices, and other conditions involved. Prepares reports and recommendations for management relative to purchase or lease of equipment.
- Prepares cost estimates involved in implementing new or modifying existing technologies/methods; estimates cost savings expected and the return on investment of such change.
- Develops and designs full sets of drawings and bills of material (BOM) for manual, semi-automatic, and automatic assembly equipment.
- Provides engineering support for fabrication and commissioning of new equipment include design review, safety signoff, and production setup.
- Develops timing sequence and pneumatic diagrams for new machines.
- Specifies design requirements for machine safety components, sensing systems, and input devices.
- Manages technical projects to ensure acceptance of STIHL standards relating to the proposal, design, component procurement, machine commission/delivery, and/or fabrication.
- Acts as a technical resource for other departments such as Production, Tooling, Purchasing, et al., to assist problem resolution or to respond to technical questions.
- Maintains records, files, and other documentation pertinent to special and regular assignments performed.
- Maintains currency with respect to technical and supervisory skills by attending training classes, special technical and administration courses, seminars, exhibits and trade shows as needed.
- All other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Specifications
- 4 year college degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
- 2+ years experience in mechanical design (including drawings and BOM generation) and manufacturing production support.
- Advanced proficiency in 3D modeling and design required; Solidworks preferred
- Intermediate knowledge of PLC programming and vision/inspection systems preferred.
- Basic Microsoft Office skills required.
