Emissions Engineer

STIHL is seeking a highly motivated, passionate Emissions Engineer to join our team at STIHL’s corporate headquarters in Virginia Beach! This individual will design, install, operate, and maintain measuring equipment necessary to measure emissions from internal combustion engines.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Participates in the overall design and layout of emissions testing laboratory and equipment to be used.
  • Coordinates the installation of equipment and sets up machines, testing equipment, etc. as required.
  • Assist in the scheduling of tests and uses established and well-defined engineering procedures to audit emission levels of manufactured products.
  • Oversees the compilation and correlation of existing and new data and develops appropriate test and data analysis methods.
  • Oversees and schedules preventative maintenance on testing equipment and engineers necessary equipment changes.
  • Coordinates outside contractor to implement equipment modifications.
  • Summarizes finding from tests, highlighting statistically significant areas and required actions.
  • Reviews quarterly and annual reports, and presents to manager for further evaluation.
  • Participates in the evaluation of emissions testing, adherence to STIHL Inc and legislated requirements, and future testing plans.
  • Develops and assists with reports and presentations for internal and external use.
  • Participates in engineering projects to develop auditing procedures, to redesign failing equipment, etc.
  • Communicates with parent company and relevant partners in R&D to facilitate problem solving and achievement of company goals.
  • Documents testing and engineering procedures via text, charts, graphs, and diagrams to illustrate process and spans of control to ensure consistency of applications across processes.
  • All work affecting product quality shall be competent on the basis of appropriate education, training, skills, and experience.
  • Assume additional related responsibilities as required.


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering (preferably with a major in combustion engines with strong background of Environmental Engineering) or related discipline.
  • 1+ years of related experience.
  • German language skills preferred
  • Experience working in conjunction with R&D
