Packaging Engineer

STIHL Inc. is seeking a self-driven Packaging Engineer to design, develop and implement cost-efficient packaging/material handling of components and products as well as coordinate logistic assignments and recommend changes to reduce costs and/or improve quality. You will have the opportunity to work among our 1800+ employees located in Virginia Beach, VA where we produce various finished products including chain saws, blowers, and trimmers, which are sold throughout the world at independently owned dealerships.

Job Duties & Responsibilities
  • Coordinates implementation and procurement of new packaging methods, including some automation and/or material handling improvements, in manufacturing and warehousing. Oversees all aspects of packaging design, processes, supplier requirements and the labeling of products.
  • Evaluates and recommends process improvements, including packaging redesign and alterations, change of material specifications, dimensions, methods, material handling, etc.
  • Prepares cost estimates involved in changing from present to new packaging/material handling; estimates savings expected as the result of such change.
  • Investigates various types of new packaging and equipment with regards to versatility and diversification of production features required, prices, and other conditions involved. Prepares reports and recommendations for management information relative to purchase or lease deal.
  • Works closely with other departments, e.g. Production, Warehousing, Purchasing, etc., to effect problem resolution or to respond to technical questions.
  • Maintains records, files, and other documentation pertinent to special and regular assignments performed.
  • Maintains currency with respect to technical and supervisory skills by attending training classes, special technical and administration courses, seminars, exhibits and trade shows as needed.
  • Participates in the development, implementation and production release of new product packaging as needed.
  • Coordinates the returnable packaging program and packaging requirements with STIHL D.
  • All work affecting product quality shall be competent on the basis of appropriate education, training, skills, and experience.
  • Assumes additional related responsibilities as required.
  • 4 year college degree in engineering
  • 4+ years of related experience
  • German fluency preferred
