Outbound Logistic Intern

About Us:

As a family-owned company, it’s the people who continue to make STIHL a successful, world-class brand. Since revolutionizing the forestry industry in Germany with the first electric chainsaw in 1926, the STIHL name has remained synonymous with outstanding innovations, high-quality products and comprehensive service.

Project Outline:

STIHL Inc. has an opening for a full time Outbound Logistics Intern in our Sales Operations Department!

STIHL Inc. maintains an inventory of spare parts at the warehouse located at 2525 International Parkway in VA Beach. Over 10,000 spare part part numbers are received, processed, and stored at this location, and then shipped to 11 distribution centers across the United States for subsequent delivery to over 10,000 servicing dealers.

The software system used by this warehouse does not support route picking by assignment of primary pick locations, and maintenance of PN locations is a manual process. Few tools are available to warehouse personnel to analyze the physical picking location of PNs as related to their cubic velocity. As a result, the overall order picking process is less efficient than it could be.

Project Goals:

  • Learn the currently available tools for identifying the physical location of PNs, cubic velocity, and picking frequency.
  • Develop formal analysis tools to quantify the physical location and cubic velocity of PNs relative to their picking frequency in order to minimize overall picking effort and time.
  • Use these tools to enable location planning of new spare parts before they are received by the warehouse.
  • Propose improvements and refinements to the methodology.
  • Sufficiently document this methodology and results so that it may be repeated in the future and further refined.
