Job Duties & Responsibilities:

•    Formulates safety policies and procedures to be followed by company or plant personnel in compliance with local, state, and federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) rules and regulations.
•    Consults with Engineering on machine safety design, as well as business managers on the safe operation and installation of equipment, fire prevention systems, and safe work rules.
•    Inspects facilities to identify existing or potential accident and health hazards or noncompliance with Federal or State laws/codes, and recommends corrective or preventative measures where indicated. Audits will include particular focus on PPE requirements and LOTO procedures.
•    Maintains safety data sheets and ensures communication to employees regarding exposure concerns and proper handling of chemicals in the workplace. 
•    Compiles and submits environmental reports required by local, state and federal regulatory agencies, including permitting requirements for storm water, sewer, and air, and maintains compliance with permitted conditions. Prepares permit applications in anticipation of operational changes which may require permit amendments or applications.
•    Creates, oversees, or presents training programs or media designed to increase proficiency in safe practices and promote safety consciousness while maintaining compliance with Federal or State laws.
•    Represents the organization in community or industry safety groups and programs, such as OPEI, PTI, or the VMA.
•    Coordinates and oversees industrial hygiene testing of work areas and processes. Reviews station ergonomics for risk mitigation and recommends changes. 
•    Facilitates compliance with ISO 14001 Environmental Management System, including modifications to forms, site access, and standards changes.  
•    Assists with emergency response planning, auditing of procedures, and employee drills. 
•    Other duties as assigned.

Specifications:

 

Education:  Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health & Safety, Biology, Chemistry, Engineering or related field.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  • Performs work under minimal supervision. Handles complex issues and problems, maintains organizational compliance with numerous regulatory agencies and guidance at local, state, and federal levels.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • 3-5 years of experience in a related field
