Commodity Manager - Packaging


We are seeking a Strategic Commodity Manager to serve as the global packaging materials subject matter expert for Purchasing within the STIHL group. This position will work closely with and communicate with Lead Buyers from STIHL group plants world-wide. A strong expertise in packaging engineering or purchasing is required.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

•    Lead of assigned commodity group according to STIHL’s collaboration model.
•    Primary contact for the commodity for Lead Buyers at STIHL plant locations on all matters regarding the commodity, (e.g. Make – or –by decisions).
•    Communicate with interface partners and stakeholders (e.g. R&D, Quality, Supply Chain, Manufacturing, Sales & Marketing, Finance, Suppliers),
•    Maintains positive relations with existing suppliers through communications of STIHL philosophy, material requirements, and pricing objectives. Contacts suppliers regarding complex material problems and resolves issues. 
•    Establishes the agenda of commodity team meetings (e.g. via face-to-face, telephone, video, etc.)
•    Drives the group focus for the commodity and balances localized plant interests needs with global needs and escalates to the Purchasing Board if necessary. 
•    Develops the commodity strategy according to the collaboration model together with commodity Council Team Members, monitors and controls the commodity strategy and implementation. Ensures strategy alignment with the Purchasing Board.
•    Performs lever analysis, identifies and drives optimization activities as part of the commodity strategy.
•    Maintains currency with respect to technical and professional skills by attending training classes, special technical and administration courses, seminars, exhibits and trade shows as needed.
•    Presents complete commodity strategies and annual updates to the Purchasing Board, inclusive of “pre-alignment” activities and “ready for approval” status of the commodity strategy. 
•    Balances the interests between the commodity strategy and R&D projects.
•    Supports and conducts joint negotiations including preparation together with Leading Buyers, inclusive of logistical and quality aspects.
•    Leads and supports Cost Reduction Projects (CRP), Value Engineering/Value Analysis (VE/VA) activities and Should Cost Modeling activities within the commodity group globally.
•    Selects suppliers based on supplier quotas from Leading Buyers and aligned with the commodity council/strategy and initiates supplier development together with Leading Buyers and Supplier Development personnel.
•    Identifies supply/supplier risks within the commodity and monitors risk mitigation activities initiated by Local Buyers.

  • 4 year college degree in Business, Engineering or related discipline or experience equivalent.
  • Minimum of 5+ years of related packaging commodity experience.
  • Self-starter with analytical abilities and experience working cross-functional teams.
  • Previous experience as a Commodity Manager developing sourcing plans and commodity strategies preferred.   
  • Experience with AT Kearney 7 Steps for Strategic Sourcing
  • 25-50% Travel (Domestic and International)
