Buyer - Indirect

This person will be responsible for coordinating activities involved in the procurement of goods and services required for production and operation within established guidelines, in addition to providing administrative, research, and project support to company personnel involved in analyzing material performance, supplier capabilities, and unit costs.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Responsible for coordinating the procurement of least complex commodities for goods and services in order to maintain proper levels of production and operation.
  • Reviews and analyzes requests from stakeholders for products and services, collects quotes, conducts RFQs, negotiates contracts and places orders to maintain inventory levels and the ongoing running of the facility.
  • Follows up on deliveries by communicating with suppliers and informing internal customers. Ensures requirements and performance expectations are clearly documented and communicated to suppliers (via Purchase Orders, Contracts and RFQs). 
  • Researches and develops competent suppliers of high quality goods and services by preparing bids, proposals, or other informational requests that contain material specification, statements of work and supplier operational data. Analyzes requested goods and services, assessing financial stability and performance capabilities of suppliers.
  • Maintains positive relations with existing suppliers through thorough communications of STIHL philosophy, quality requirements, performance expectations and pricing objectives.
  • Acts as an escalation point on behalf of the organization with the supplier to resolve quality problems, delayed receipt of goods or services, policy and procedure violations, wrong items, and other inability to meet expectations. Meets with supplier to negotiate prices, review and analyze operations, and check quality, evaluating short-term and long-term ability of suppliers to meet STIHL expectations.
  • Works with other department personnel, such as Finance, Production and other internal customers to address order, invoice, and contractual issues. Refers more complex problems or issues to higher level Procurement Buyers or to supervisor.
  • Enforces supplier price compliance against Contracts and established pricing arrangements
  • Maintains records and documentation pertaining to past activities, order specifications, supplier specifications and performance histories, etc. and provides information to management as needed.
  • Works with Accounts Payable to ensure timely payment of conforming orders received and return/rework of materials that are defective.
  • Maintains currency with respect to technical and professional skills by attending training classes, special technical and administration courses, seminars, exhibits and trade shows as needed.
  • All work affecting product quality shall be competent on the basis of appropriate education, training, skills, and experience.
  • Assumes additional related responsibilities as required.


  • 4 year college degree in related discipline or experience equivalent.
  • 1+ years' relevant experience
